Most of the time you spend zoomed out and barely see the unit models anyway and the music pretty meh as the default music is pretty good by itself. Id reccomend you wait till theyre on sale before picking anything up and completely ignore the unit models/music dlc. You can definitely have fun and never get a single dlc, but if you enjoy the game or find your runs getting boring, grab a dlc for a region you play and make it brand new.

The game is playable with no dlc at all, even more so with the free updates. Play the base game, and if you like it think about the subscription or buying the DLC.

That was before all the free updates it has received over the years to boot. In fact I liked it so much I starting picking up DLC eventually. I played the base game many years ago just fine. So yeah, the negative ratings for the DLCs aren't there because they are pointless and should be avoided - it's because of the exact opposite: you really do need them far too much because base EU4 likely won't be very fun, and you will also have to spend way more than you ever realistically should for a game, unless mabye if you buy the game's DLC keys from a site like G2A or Humnble Bundle I'm pretty sure that base EU4 + buying enough DLC to make it worth playing will easily cost you more than $150 - this won't even give you the full experience, but it will make it so you're not lacking the most fundamental of features that should be in the game anyway.Īfter all, buying all DLCs that will actually benefit you gameplay-wise is probably going to cost around 250 USD or so, with another 150 for music, skins, and other mostly irrelevant features. Now, certain portions of this game's fanbase are delusional enough that they will defend this tooth and nail, but EU4 is a game that costs far more than the $40 theoretically advertized for the main game in order to be actually "playable" in some significant way. The sad truth is that you will absolutely need at least some of the most important DLCs to be realistically able to play the game at all.
